미국 온라인 커뮤니티 '레딧(Reddit)'에 전·현직 호텔 직원들이 충격적인 비밀들을 털어놓았다(reveal shocking secrets). 막후에서 벌어지는(go on behind the scenes) 불편한 진실들, 주의해야 할 것들에 대한 고백(confessions about things to look out for)이다.

이들에 따르면 술병은 뚜껑을 잘 살펴봐야 한다. 위스키를 마신 뒤 미니바 계산서 지불을 피하려는 교활한 시도로(in a sneaky attempt to avoid paying the minibar bill) 빈병에 오줌을 채워놓는(refill an empty bottle with urine) 손님이 있다고 한다.

침대에선 시트 외엔 가까이하지 않는(steer clear of anything but the sheets) 것이 좋다. 청소원들은 이불 덮개의 밝은 색 얼룩은 젖은 천으로 닦아내기만 하라는 지시를 받는다(be directed to simply wipe white stains off the duvet with a damp cloth). 보이지 않을 때까지 문질러 닦고(scour them) 다시 덮어놓는다.

청소시간? 객실 1실당 단 15분. 객실 유리잔은 욕실 세면대에서 씻어서(rinse glasses in the bathroom sink) 베갯잇으로 닦아놓는다(dry them with a pillow case). 그것도 잔이 지저분해 보일 때만(only if they look dirty) 그렇게 한다. 물론 모든 호텔이 다 똑같은(be created equal) 것은 아니다. 가감해서 들어야(take them with a grain of salt) 한다.

밤늦은 시간에 객실로 전화를 걸어 프런트데스크 직원 행세를 하며(pose as a front-desk worker) 신용카드 번호, 유효기간 등을 알려달라는 경우가 있다. 해커들에 의해 사용되는 신용 사기 수법(a scam used by hackers)이다. 프런트데스크에서 밤늦게 객실로 전화하는 일은 없다.

호텔에서 특전을 누리려면(get perks) 벨맨과 친해지는(make friends with a bellman) 것이 좋다. 호텔 특전들을 즉시 이용할 수 있는 권한을 갖고 있기(hold the power of hotel perks at their fingertips) 때문이다. 가장 중요한 점(the name of the game)은 공짜 물병부터 셔틀 이용에 이르기까지 온갖 편의를 봐줄(provide every convenience from free water bottles to shuttle rides) 수 있다는 것.

호텔 예약을 해놓았는데 임박해서(at the last minute) 취소해야 할 경우 취소 수수료가 겁난다면(be scared of a cancellation fee)? 전화를 걸어 예약을 몇 주 뒤로 미뤄달라고(push your reservation forward a few weeks) 한다. 그리고 그날 늦게 다시 전화를 해서(call back later that day) 취소한다. 그러면 내지 않아도 된다.
